18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.”
19 So the Lord God formed from the ground all the wild animals and all the birds of the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would call them, and the man chose a name for each one.
20 He gave names to all the livestock, all the birds of the sky, and all the wild animals. But still there was no helper just right for him.
21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep. While the man slept, the Lord God took out one of the man’s ribs and closed up the opening.
22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib, and he brought her to the man.
23 “At last!” the man exclaimed. “This one is bone from my bone, and flesh from my flesh! She will be called ‘woman,’ because she was taken from ‘man.’”
24 This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.
25 Now the man and his wife were both naked, but they felt no shame. Genesis 2:18-25
God brought the animals to Adam not just to name them, but also to find his helpmate. Remember at the time there was no human being except Adam himself. Both Adam and the Lord were involved in the search of a helpmate. It is interesting to see that God did not imposed a helpmate to Adam but rather got him involved in the choice. All that God did was to bring the potential helpmate to him and left it to him to make a choice.
So why did God bring the animals to Adam instead of the plants? Well they were closer match to Adam than the plants. They were made of flesh and blood and had an extra dimension, which is the soul. Adam could relate emotionally with them. This is what you get with pets today.
But Adam called them everything except a match. Why?
Because the most important dimension that characterised him as human being was missing. It was the dimension that made him different to other animals. It was the human spirit inside of him. Remember he was the only person created in the image of God. There was no other. God wanted Adam to get to know himself as a person. Look, he appeared on this planet out of nowhere! God allowed him to look deep inside of himself to find out what he was made of. With the animals he learnt a bit about his physical body. He didn’t have any mirror rememberJ.
He was also able to discover his soul as he could express emotion and could see the animals do likewise. But then he realised that he was more than an animal, he discovered that he was more than a soul. There was something missing. He said to God “sorry, but I can call them everything except a helpmate. They are great but something is not quite right. Something is missing somewhere. I am not quite sure what it is. I can’t put my fingers on it. Sorry, I don’t want to be picky or anything but they are not my type.”
I am sure God was saying to himself, “Good boy, you are learning very fast. I know that they are nothing like you, but I wanted you to find out by yourself. I didn’t want to tell you. So now that you know, I can bring you the real helpmate.”
So we witness the first open surgery in human history and the use of anaesthetic as well. God simply removed the female characteristics in Adam and turned into another human being. We read, “She will be called ‘woman,’ because she was taken from ‘man.’”
Where was the woman before she was created? Part of man. Adam was complete before the woman was created, but the social aspect was missing. So here you have basically have one man becoming two. It is interesting what we read next,
24 This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.
The first creation Adam was a full person with both male and female characteristics. But socially, it wasn’t fun. Can you imagine Adam talking to his other half inside of himself? All the animals around would think he was mad. Well people say that anyway when you start talking to yourself. I guest God having created man in His own image made Adam just like himself, being father, son and holy spirit. It probably works for a purely spiritual being, but God figured for a being that is both spiritual and physical, that might not help. So he splits the original man into two. Making each one incomplete. In order to have the full and complete human being, there needs to be a union of the two. This is why we have marriage.
